Text messaging has come a long way since the early days of mobile communication. Here are five tips to help you become a text messaging ninja on the Galaxy Note 4.
- Preview MMS Links Before You Open Them
- Define words on the fly
- Change your font size using the volume keys
- Use split-screen to become a SMS ninja
- Use keyboard shortcuts for the things you say most
1. Preview MMS Links Before You Open Them
Hyperlinks are like a box of chocolates. You never know what you’re gonna get. Luckily you can use the S-pen to hover over any links to view a slick preview card that will show you the page title, description and thumbnail before clicking them.
2. Define words on the fly
Let’s face it: some of us don’t have the best vocabulary skills. If you ever find yourself in a conversation where you have no idea what the other person is talking about, simply highlight the unknown words with your s-pen and tap the Define (Dictionary) button from the pop-up menu to be presented with definition.
Select text by holding down the button on the S-pen while pressing the stylus on the screen and moving across text. There are many dictionary options available for download, you can also translate the word to another language by swiping the definition to the left.
Tap the maximize button on the pop-up window to view a more detailed definition, if you try to define a word not found in the dictionary or want more definitions tap the search web option at the bottom of the screen.
From here it is even possible to search for books and images related to the words you choose. It is possible to download additional dictionaries and languages by tapping the menu button and selecting manage dictionaries from the full screen definition view.
3. Change your font size using the volume keys
A simple but often overlooked feature in the Samsung default messaging app is the ability to change the size of your message text by hitting up or down on the volume rocker.
Give it a try by tapping the settings icon from the main conversation list and navigating to Display > Change font size.
4. Use split-screen for holding multiple conversations at once
If you are one of those people who only communicate via text message, split-screen may be the perfect solution for managing multiple conversations at once. This function allows you to quickly switch between conversations.
With this option enabled, flipping your phablet to landscape mode will create two separate windows for the conversation list and active message. To give it a try, open the default messaging app and navigate to Settings > Display > Split View.
5. Use keyboard shortcuts for the things you say most
This feature migrates to the Note 4 from the Galaxy S5 and allows you assign phrases you type frequently to shortcuts on your keyboard. This is particularly useful for keeping all of your killer catch phrases and best one liners on tap.
It works similar to the way speed dial works on your phone. When you hold down an assigned number key, your custom phrase will automatically be placed into the selected text area. Navigate over to Settings > Language and Input > Samsung Keyboard (Gear Icon) > My Hotkeys to get started.
