Chances are you haven’t heard of smartphone maker Maze before. They are a new manufacturer who made their debut with their first Android smartphone, the Maze Blade, which received little fanfare thanks to a relatively boring design with huge bezels.
Now it seems the young Chinese company has learned from its mistakes, coming out with a new flagship device aimed at phablet fans that features a bezel-less 6-inch screen that can be easily managed with one hand. The new Maze Alpha features a marvelous design, combined with a plethora of cutting edge hardware features packed inside.
With almost no bezels on right, left and top side, the Maze Alpha features a rather thick bottom bezel that houses the 5MP front camera and a physical home button that doubles as a fingerprint sensor. The main highlight of the phones face, of course, is the 6-inch Full HD AMOLED display with 16:9 aspect ratio.
Thanks to a true edge-to-edge design, Maze has managed to pack this 6-inch display into a smaller 5.5-inch like body. This makes for an extremely comfortable one-handed experience despite the large screen size. The Alpha handset sports a premium zinc alloy metal frame with a traditional design language, featuring power and volume buttons on the right side, and a dual nano SIM reader on the left.
Powered by Helio P25 Octa Core 2.5GHz chipset, the Maze Alpha sports a dual camera setup featuring 13 MP and 5 MP sensors around back. The phone is available in two RAM variants: 4GB RAM with 64GB of storage, and 6GB RAM with 128GB storage. No matter which variant you choose, a microSD card slot will be there to back you up, in the event that the default storage capacity isn’t enough for you.
The Maze Alpha runs Android 7.0 Nougat out of the box and comes with a USB Type-C connector on the bottom of the phone for charging and data transfers. Stereo speakers are outfitted on either side of the USB port which indicate a better sound experience in portrait mode rather than landscape.
As for the dual camera, the 13 MP main sensor is combined with an assistive 5 MP sensor that is used to collect information about depth and lighting. The main camera has an f/2.2 aperture does not feature an OIS module, so don’t expect this camera to outperform the best players in the market.
Perhaps one of the most interesting features of the Alpha is its massive 4000 mAh battery, which is much larger than what you will find on the latest flagship devices from big manufacturers such as Samsung, LG or Apple. To help put things into perspective, the LG G6 comes with a 3300 mAh battery, while the Galaxy S8 Plus featured a much smaller 3500 mAh battery despite having a much larger screen resolution and size.
According to the Maze, the Alpha phablet will cost $179.99 if you pre-order before June 30, while the actual price will be roughly $219.99. A price like that makes the Maze Alpha the cheapest bezel-less smartphone on the market, giving the more expensive Essential Phone and Samsung Galaxy S8 a hard run for their money.
You can purchase the phone online through Chinese electronics importer GearBest, but Maze is targeting the European market with the Alpha by including 4G LTE connectivity with the most common carriers. 4G LTE bands in the United States aren’t supported by the Alpha, but 3G signals should be compatible.
