Samsung Galaxy Note 4 and Note 5 get July security patches

A new update for the Samsung Galaxy Note 4 is on its way for European users that brings along Android security fixes for the month of July. The update comes not long after Samsung sent a similar one out to the Galaxy S8 and S8+.

The update is posted as version N910FXXS1DQG5 and weighs in at a healthy 200MB. Aside from the latest security patches, the update fixes several bugs and improves the stability and performance of the three-year-old device.

Samsung’s latest firmware transports patches for a total of 65 Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures (CVE) in the Android OS and 16 weaknesses in the firm’s Galaxy-branded smartphones. It’s unclear at this time if any kind of similar package is on its way to us across the pond.

Meanwhile, back in the United States, the Galaxy Note5 has also started seeing a new update on T-Mobile, which brings along system improvements and security patches. This update is much smaller in scope, weighing in at a mere 24.39 MB and carrying the version N920TUVS4EQG1.

Because these updates are being sent out over the air, it might take a little while before you are notified on your phone. You easily check for the update manually by going to Settings > Software updates.

If you are due up to get one of these updates, there are a few things to consider before you proceed. Be sure your battery is charged to at least 50% and preferably connected to a Wi-Fi network.

Be careful not to disturb your phone during the update process by touching any buttons or removing the battery. Interrupting an update during an installation runs a high risk of permanently damaging your device.

Also be mindful of the fact that you won’t be able to make any calls on your device while the update is being downloaded and installed. That includes 911 emergency calls, so don’t try to install these when vulnerabilities are high.

It’s also possible to perform some updates from a computer using Samsung Smart Switch. The procedure is as simple as plugging up your phone via USB and you will be automatically prompted if a software update is available for your device.

When prompted, click Update to being downloading the installation package and click OK once it’s finished to proceed. Your phone may switch off and on a few times during the update process.

Once the update is complete, your phone will return to the home screen. Smart Switch is available for download here: http://www.samsung.com/us/support/smart-switch-support/#!/
